Spirituality Institute for Research and Education (SpIRE) is delighted to host a lecture “Seers—and explorers—these we must be” – The Spirituality of Dag Hammarskjöld with Dr. Roger Lipsey in Gonzaga College on Saturday 20 February at 11.00am. Dr. Roger Lipsey is the author of ‘Hammarskjöld: A Life’, the acclaimed recent biography of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld. He has also written several books about the monk and author Thomas Merton.
Dag Hammarskjöld (1905 – 1961), second Secretary-General of the United Nations, was both seer and explorer. A seer in the sense that, on the basis of deep loyalty to Christian mystical and ethical teachings (Meister Eckhart, Thomas à Kempis), he approached himself privately and the world’s strife and promise with penetrating vision. As well, he was an explorer, a peacemaker adept at advancing through rough terrain at the height of the Cold War. “One with your task, whole in your duty of the moment,” he wrote in his journal Markings. Addressing himself—and us all.
Admission cost is €10.00 and pre-booking is essential. To book, email Michael O’Sullivan: [email protected]
