SUMMARY:4-day Summer Retreat
DESCRIPTION:‘Joyful Faith!’ is a 4-day Summer Retreat taking place at Manresa\, Jesuit Centre of Spirituality from 14-19 August. Preaching in troubled El Salvador in 1980\, Oscar Romero proclaimed\, “God is not a God of sadness but a God of celebrations and feasts\, a God of happiness. Therefore in the heart of people who have faith there is no room for pessimism.” This retreat invites you to spend some time with people such as Edith Stein\, John XXIII\, Dorothy Day and Oscar Romero\, considering what inspired them and how they can encourage us in our Christian lives. Daily talks will be matched with times of prayer\, reflection and silence.  The retreat will be directed by Avril O’Regan RLR and Brendan Comerford SJ.

SUMMARY:Venerable John Sullivan Mass
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Mass in thanksgiving for life of Venerable Fr John Sullivan SJ\, and in prayer for his canonisation. Special homily and blessing with crucifix of Fr John Sullivan after Mass. \nServant of God\, Venerable John Sullivan SJ (1861-1933) was a Jesuit priest with a reputation for sanctity. He was formed in both the Protestant and Catholic traditions\, having been brought up in the Protestant tradition of his father before he was received into the Catholic Church and later entered the Jesuits. Known for his love of the poor\, his life of prayer and fasting\, and his care of the sick\, he spent much of his priestly life in Clongowes Wood College\, Co. Kildare. There was great devotion to him in his lifetime and that devotion has continued since his death on the 19th February\, 1933. Many people believe that his prayers have brought the healing power of God into their lives and his tomb in St. Francis Xaviers’ Church in Gardiner Street\, Dublin is visited daily by those who seek his help. In 1960 Fr John was declared a Servant of God. He was was declared ‘Venerable’ by Pope Francis in November 2014. SUMMARY:Seminar: ‘Caring for Our Common Home’
DESCRIPTION:The Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice and Trócaire\, in association with the Loyola Institute\, Trinity College Dublin will host a seminar ‘Caring for our Common Home; Towards an Integrated Perspective on Society and the Environment’ on Wednesday 8 June\, at Room G16\, Loyola Institute\, Trinity College\, Dublin 2. The seminar will mark one year since the publication of Laudato Si’\, the social and environmental encyclical letter from Pope Francis. \nAdmission is free. All are welcome to attend. However as places are limited\, registration is required. Please see the event page to register: For more information\, contact Catherine at 01 8556814 or cdevitt@jcfj.ie \nThe event brings together speakers including Catherine Devitt (Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice)\, Dr. Lorna Gold (Trόcaire)\, Dr. Liam Lysaght (National Biodiversity Centre)\, and Dr. John Barry (Queens University Belfast) to discuss the implications of Laudato Si’\, and offer response on how we can develop an integrated perspective on social and ecological problems and responses to achieve more just and sustainable ways of living. \nThe seminar will include opening remarks from Éamonn Meehan (Trόcaire) and Catherine Devitt (Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice)\, and the following presentations by the guest speakers: \n\nIreland’s Biodiversity; why we need to care for our ecosystems (Dr. Liam Lysaght\, National Biodiversity Data Centre)\nThe Challenge of Laudato Si’ for Governance and Policy (Dr. Lorna Gold\, Trόcaire)\nRedefining our understanding of progress for human wellbeing and flourishing (Dr. John Barry\, Queens University Belfast)\n\nA panel discussion will also take place\, chaired by Dr. Cathriona Russell (TCD)\, which will reflect on the importance of the encyclical and offer response on how we can drive the conversation forward\, particularly in Ireland\, to help realise the social and ecological transformation Pope Francis calls for. There will be closing remarks from John Guiney SJ (Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice). \nBackground \nWe have reached a critical point in history: the accumulation of wealth at a scale never experienced before exists alongside\, and is contributing to significant and increasing poverty and global inequality\, the degradation of whole ecosystems is causing significant species decline\, and the increasingly apparent threat of climate change risks destabilising our existence on Earth\, and that of the thousands of other species we share our common home with. \nWe are called to make challenging decisions as to how we can create a more just and equal global society that is sensitive to the needs and processes of the natural environment in which we belong. Laudato Si’\, the social and environmental encyclical letter from Pope Francis in 2015 generated much discussion and debate on these issues\, and offered an integrated perspective on how we should respond to such complex socio-ecological challenges.
