SUMMARY:19 MAR: Venerable John Sullivan Mass
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Mass in thanksgiving for life of Venerable Fr John Sullivan SJ\, and in prayer for his canonisation. Special homily and blessing with crucifix of Fr John after Mass. \nServant of God\, Venerable John Sullivan SJ (1861-1933) was a Jesuit priest with a reputation for sanctity. He was formed in both the Protestant and Catholic traditions\, having been brought up in the Protestant tradition of his father before he was received into the Catholic Church and later entered the Jesuits. Known for his love of the poor\, his life of prayer and fasting\, and his care of the sick\, he spent much of his priestly life in Clongowes Wood College\, Co. Kildare. There was great devotion to him in his lifetime and that devotion has continued since his death on the 19th February\, 1933. Many people believe that his prayers have brought the healing power of God into their lives and his tomb in St. Francis Xaviers’ Church in Gardiner Street\, Dublin is visited daily by those who seek his help. In 1960 Fr John was declared a Servant of God. He was was declared ‘Venerable’ by Pope Francis in November 2014. See www.frjohnsullivan.ie for features\, photos and videos on the life of Venerable Fr John Sullivan SJ and devotion to him.

SUMMARY:08 MAR: Lecture - 'The Spirituality of Virginia Woolf'
DESCRIPTION:Spirituality Institute for Research and Education (SpIRE) is delighted to host a lecture “The Spirituality of Virginia Woolf” with Prof. Stephanie Paulsell in the Jesuit Conference Centre\, Milltown Park on Tuesday 8 March at 8.00pm. Prof. Paulsell is Susan Shallcross Swartz Professor of the Practice of Christian Studies at Harvard Divinity School\, Harvard University\, USA. She is past president of the international Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality and author of a forthcoming book about Virginia Woolf. \nThe novelist Virginia Woolf may seem an unlikely conversation partner for thinking about spirituality. But her attempts in her novels and essays to find language for the unknowable more in human life–from the mysteries of other human beings to “something in the universe one’s left with”—often emerge from critical engagements with the spiritual dimensions of literary practice. This talk will explore both the complex religious context around Woolf and the shape of spiritual practice in her work\, especially two of her greatest novels\, Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse. \nAdmission cost is €10.00 and pre-booking is essential. To book\, email Michael O’Sullivan: spiremos@gmail.com \nRegister and pay from 7.30 pm; the event starts promptly at 8.00 pm. \nThis event is being organised by the Spirituality Institute for Research and Education (SpIRE). The Spirituality Institute for Research and Education (SpIRE) has been established to ensure that Ireland can serve the spiritual seeking\, contribute to the academic study of spirituality in higher education\, and promote the phenomenon of ‘spirituality and’\, such as spirituality and healthcare\, spirituality and aging\, spirituality and management\, spirituality and leadership\, spirituality and social concern\, spirituality and childhood\, spiritualit and ecology\, etc.\, that are all ‘signs of the times’ across the globe. Michael O’Sullivan\, SJ is the Executive Director of SpIRE.

Rafferty SJ \nThis collection of essays looks at the interrelated themes of Catholicism\, violence and politics in the Irish context in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although much effort was expended by institutional Catholicism in trying to curb the violent propensities of the Fenians in the nineteenth century and the IRA in the twentieth\, its efforts were largely unsuccessful. Ironically\, Catholicism had greater achievements to boast of in its influence in the British Empire as a whole than over its wayward flock in Ireland. But there was a cost in the church’s commitment to British imperial expansion that did not always sit easily with growing nationalist expectations in Ireland. \nAlthough it provided support for the British forces in the First World War\, by the time of the Second World War the church’s views of that conflict differed little from those of the government of independent Ireland\, although there were sufficient differences that ensured Catholicism was not just nationalism at prayer. \nThese and other issues such as religious perceptions of the Famine\, Cardinal Cullen’s role in shaping the ethos of Irish Catholicism and the role of memory\, including religious memory\, in Irish violence combine to make this a fascinating study. \nOliver P. Rafferty SJ is professor of modern Irish and ecclesiastical history at Boston College. He is also director of Irish programs. His previous books include The Catholic Church and the Protestant State: nineteenth-century Irish realities (2008) and George Tyrrell and Catholic Modernism (2010).\n\nHardback. 256pp. Available Now. ISBN: 978-1-84682-583-5. Retail Price: €45.00.\nhttp://www.fourcourtspress.ie/books/2016/violence-politics-and-catholicism-in-ireland/

As part of events to celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis he will speak at the Loyola Institute\, Trinity College Dublin on Aquinas’s perspective on mercy. \n“Mercy without justice is the mother of dissolution; justice without mercy is cruelty.” Thomas Aquinas\, Super Matthaeum\, Cap. V\, l. 2 \nAquinas may have lived more than 700 years ago\, but according to Professor O’Callaghan: “We Thomists don’t study Aquinas merely because we find his thought historically interesting\, although it is. He is a permanent member of the Pontifical Academy of St Thomas Aquinas. O’Callaghan is the author of the frequently cited article on Thomas Aquinas found in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
