SUMMARY:11 NOV: Talk - Cork Jesuit Chaplains in the First World War
DESCRIPTION:“Life here is very pleasant and interesting\, provided one does not mind being killed…” Fr John Gwynn SJ\n\n  \nAn illustrated talk to mark Armistice Day on Jesuit chaplains from Cork who served in the First World War.\n\n  \nChaplains in the First World War served alongside the troops at the Front\, both in the trenches and on the battlefields\, exposed to the same dangers and threats. Many Jesuit chaplains from Cork were highly decorated and recognised for their exceptional bravery by both men and commanding officers. This talk\, illustrated with letters\, photographs and telegrams from the Irish Jesuit Archives\, will offer an insight into the experiences and thoughts of these Jesuits from Cork who expected to spend their lives in priestly ministry in schools\, parishes\, churches and universities – not on the battlefield.\n\n  \n\nThe talk will be given by Damien Burke\, Assistant Archivist of the Irish Jesuit Archives. Damien\, a native of Cork\, works in the Jesuit archives in Leeson Street\, Dublin. He edited Irish Jesuit Chaplains in the First World War\, published by Messenger Publications (2014).

SUMMARY:23 OCT: Consecrated Life - A Living Tradition within the Church
DESCRIPTION:Pope Francis named this year as a Year of Consecrated Life. He invites the whole church to reflect on and come to appreciate the charisms of this ecclesial lifestyle. Marking the fiftieth anniversary of Perfectæ Caritatis\, Vatican II’s document on religious life\, this weekend directed by Brian O’Leary SJ offers an opportunity to take up\, thoughtfully and prayerfully\, the Pope’s call. Using insights from the Bible\, the history of religious life\, and its underlying theology\, we will explore the sources of the passion and commitment that religious life\, at its best\, has always embodied. In this way we will be able to embrace an uncertain future with hope. \n  \n

SUMMARY:14 OCT: Movies that Matter
DESCRIPTION:The popular Movies that Matter series continues with a new selection of films this Autumn. Each evening begins at 7:30 pm and involves watching a film and participating in reflective discussion guided by Eileen O’Driscoll during which there will be an opportunity to reflect both personally and as a group on the issues and values illustrated. The films from Poland\, UK\, Australia and Spain portray a variety of issues. Through these films we get a glimpse of what it means to be truly human; nobility of character shines through in them all. \nThe Film for October is Big Fish UK 2003\, 125 MINS\, CERT PG. \n Hearing the tall tales of his ailing father\, William Bloom seeks to uncover the facts behind the fiction of a larger-than-life character. Directed by the marvellously creative Tim Burton\, this film raises questions about the relationship of truth and story.   \nFor details of the films being shown each month\, sign up for the Manresa newsletter at www.manresa.ie

SUMMARY:30 SEP: Waking up Ireland - Refugee Crisis
DESCRIPTION:This meeting is being organised by Gardiner Street Parish to “take our bearings” in relation to the Refugee Crisis. \nOur basic question is: what can we do? \nSo the meeting will be like a workshop on who\, what\, why\, where\, when? \nNo expertise needed\, just an interest and willingness to share information. \nFor further information please contact: Fr. Gerry Clarke SJ at (01) 707 3027 or sfx@jesuit.ie \nPrayer for Refugees \nCompassionate God\, No one is a stranger to you and no one is ever far from your loving care. Watch over those who are separated from their loved ones and homeland; those who fear persecution and hope for a better life in our community. May we reach out in welcome to all those who arrive as refugees\, embracing one another so that together your hope will be our future. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
