MAY07: The Suppression & Restoration of the Jesuits

The Veale Chair of Spirituality at Milltown Institute present this lecture by Dr. Todd Morrissey SJ “The Suppression and Restoration of the Jesuits and the Irish Scene” which deals with some of the causes of the suppression of the Jesuits generally, and of the effect in Ireland, and then treats of the stages leading to the restoration of the order and of the problems facing the Society after its restoration. Some of the subsequent developments in Ireland are also noted.

Dr. Thomas J. Morrissey is a Jesuit priest, an educationalist and historian. Former headmaster of Crescent College Comprehensive, Limerick, and Director of the National College of Industrial Relations, Dublin, he has taken his degrees in History from N.U.I. and has written some sixteen historical works. These include: Towards a National University (1983); The Social Teaching of James Connolly (ed. 1991); Peter Kenney, S.J., 1779-1841. His Mission in Ireland and North America (1996); William J. Walsh, Archbishop of Dublin, 1841-1921 (2000); William O’Brien, 1881-1968, Socialist, Dail Deputy, Trade Union Leader…(2007); Jesuits in Hong Kong, South China and Beyond (2008); Laurence O’Neill, Lord Mayor of Dublin, 1917-1924 (2013); and From Easter Week to Flanders Field.
