Belvedere mourns Garret FitzGerald

May 24, 2011 in General, News

As the entire country mourned the death of Garret FitzGerald, all those associated with Belvedere College felt a special sense of loss at his passing. One of the College’s most distinguished past pupils, his classmates in the early forties included two future Archbishops of Dublin, Dr. Dermot Ryan and Cardinal Desmond Connell. He was a brilliant student and had already passed his Leaving Certificate at aged 16 and spent an additional year in the school while waiting to attend UCD. The staff, the present student body and the Past Pupils Union were all strongly represented at his State Funeral in the Sacred Heart Church in Donnybrook. Headmaster Gerry Foley is pictured here outside the Church with students of the college.
