Remembering Father Gerald O’Collins SJ
Fr Gerald O’Collins SJ, renowned theologian and prolific author, died unexpectedly on Thursday 22 August 2024. He was ninety-three. The theme of this autumn’s edition of the Irish Jesuit journal Studies is the result of a collaboration between himself and Studies editor Dermot Roantree, featuring previously unpublished letters between the poet Seamus Heaney and a fellow Australian Jesuit academic friend of Gerald’s, Peter Steele SJ.
Australian Jesuit Richard Leonard SJ, friend of the Irish Jesuit Province has been in Ireland speaking at Knock and recording some podcasts with Irish Jesuit Communications. Before he left the country today (30 August) he spoke to Pat Coyle about his fellow Jesuit and countryman Gerald Collins SJ, whom he knew personally.
In this interview, he talks about Gerald as a Jesuit, theologian, lecturer, and warm-hearted human being who leaves the world a lot better off for having lived and worked in it, up to the very end.
