Breakfast with Newman
Michael Paul Gallagher’s lecture in Gardiner Street Church, ‘Translating Newman for Today’, drew a large crowd from Dublin, Wicklow, Roscommon, Meath, Kildare and other parts of the country; also members of the Newman Society and many others hungry for good theology. They heard of Newman’s personal journey of faith and his time in Ireland, as well as an overall introduction to his thought. It was a sort of beginning of the celebration of his beatification, which continued the next evening with Evening Prayer in the Newman church, and a performance of ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ in the Concert Hall. When he lived locally Newman said Mass in Gardiner St church and breakfasted with the community. We have no notes of any wisdom shared on either side, as breakfast in those days was in silence!
