A life of kindness & dedication: Sean Ó Cearbhalláin S.J.
The Irish Jesuit community is mourning the peaceful death of Fr. Seán Ó Cearbhalláin, S.J., who died in Hong Kong on 23 August 2026, aged 87. Surrounded by friends and fellow Jesuits, Fr. Seán died as Mass was celebrated beside him, bringing to a close a life marked by faith, service, teaching and deep pastoral commitment.
Born in Derry in 1938, Fr. Seán entered the Society of Jesus in 1956 and was ordained a priest in 1971. He spent much of his ministry in Hong Kong, where he taught, accompanied generations of students and played a significant role in the Christian Life Community.
Remembered for his kindness, spiritual guidance and devotion, he was the last Irish Jesuit missionary serving in Hong Kong, bringing to an end a century of Irish Jesuit missionary presence there.
