ricci_conf_01A huge variety of events were held worldwide to celebrate the 450th anniversary of Matteo Ricci, the unique Jesuit missionary to China. In Ireland we had the Ricci Mass and seminar with Antoni Üçerler SJ, and the poster designed by John White has now travelled the world. Also, the Jesuit Communication Centre made a schools pack available, and it was downloaded by many schools. Some of them have submitted entries to a Ricci competition. Teacher Joan Fitzpatrick, Loreto College, Drumkeen, Co Cavan wrote: “We were fascinated to learn so much about a man we had not heard of before, especially since as a Jesuit he followed so closely the Ignatian ethos that Mary Ward, founder of the Loreto sisters, admired so much”. Her pupils wrote a letter as if they were Ricci or a Chinese person who had met him. Read one here.
