Yeats and Fr Browne
Much praise was heaped on Eddie O’Donnell SJ at the launch of The Father Browne Yeats, the latest in a long list of books of Fr Browne photos which Fr O’Donnell has produced. An Irish Jesuit (1880-1960), Fr Frank Browne left behind a massive corpus of photographs which document all aspects of Irish life in the first half of the 20th century. His work was largely forgotten after his death until Fr O’Donnell (pictured here at the launch) unearthed a metal trunk in 1986 with more than 40,000 negatives in it! The father Browne Yeats is an elegant volume which combines 60 poems by WB Yeats with 60 well-chosen photos by Fr Browne. It was launched by Bruce Bradley SJ – aptly in a room adjacent to the WB Yeats exhibition hall in the National Library. The book is available from Messenger Publications, the publishers.
