dcollins_01“It is not the suffering that makes the martyr but the cause” said Fr Barney McGuckian during the Blessed Dominic Collin’s Memorial Lecture in the parish hall of the  Holy Family Church, Youghal on Wednesday, October 27th. He was quoting St John of the Cross, a contemporary of Blessed Dominic, the Jesuit brother who was martyred in his home town on October 31st, 1602 and one of the sixteen Irish men and women martyrs beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 27th, 1993. Every Christian in every age is called to be a martyr, a “witness” to the Risen Lord of us all, whether or not this entails bloodshed. His lecture followed a special celebratory mass in the Holy Family Church, which is home to the painting of Dominic Collins (pictured here) by Walter Verling HRHA.
