By way of the Heart

Messenger publications has recently published By Way of the Heart, Pierre Favre SJ, the First Jesuit Companion, by Father Brendan Comderford SJ.

Pierre Favre (1506 – 1546) was born in Villaret, France, a village on the slopes of the Alps, however, he didn’t want to be a shepherd. Instead he followed a path of spirituality and along with Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint Francis Xavier, they founded the Jesuit Order in 1540. Saint Ignatius famously said of him that “He was the most gifted among the early companions at giving the Spiritual Exercises.” During his lifetime he was sought after as a spiritual director and counsellor by the crowned heads of Portugal and Spain, the nobility of Parma and Cologne, as well as cardinals, bishops and priests across Europe.

The author, Brendan Comerford SJ has chosen the title By Way of the Heart with care. He explains that Favre was a gentle, unassuming man, focused not on theology and academic investigation, but on pastoral engagement, listening, and courteous dialogue. His lack of ego and pride, as well as his charm, meant he was at ease with all – kings and peasants, theologians and children.

Favre always followed his heart, valuing personal connection over intellectual argument. He put people first, but Favre himself was overlooked. Although the process for the beatification of Pierre Favre began just 80 years after his death in 1546, it was almost 500 years before he was canonised by his Jesuit confrère, Pope Francis.

Father Brendan writes about Favre’s extensive travels in Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Germany and his native France during his short life. He also reflects on Favre’s character, in particular his commitment to others and how he touched the hearts and changed the minds of many. In 2013, the world finally recognised what the people of Villaret had known for generations, this man was a Saint.
