Short Notices
- Eleven alumni of Jesuit schools featured in this year’s Colours match between Dublin University and UCD. Clongowes and Gonzaga each fielded four, Belvedere two and Colaiste Iognaid one. UCD, unbeaten all year, were determined to finish the season with that record intact, but at the final whistle it was Trinity who were celebrating a 31-22 victory, with all the Jesuit boys giving a good account of themselves. Pictured: Two former team-mates in Clongowes and opponents in the Colours match: (left) Tom Fletcher of UCD, and Tim O’Mahony.
- Irish Jesuit Brian MacCuarta, the new Archivist of the Society, gave a tour of the archives to the new Provincials, including Ireland’s Tom Layden, during their recent session in Rome.
- Best-selling author Mary Higgins Clark’s latest book, I’ll Walk Alone, is dedicated:
“In memory of Reverend Joseph A. Kelly, S.J.
Always a twinkle in this Jesuit’s eye
Always a smile on his handsome face
Always faith and compassion overflowing his soul
He was the stuff of which saints are made
When all heaven protested his absence
His Creator called him home
- Belvedere’s regular contacts with the Jesuit Gymnasium in Gdynia, Poland, culminated in a visit by eleven students, two teachers and the Headmaster to Belvedere. During their four days in Dublin the Poles learned some Irish cooking, visited Glendalough, experienced the St Patrick’s Day parade, and got a good taste of Irish culture and the ‘craic’ that goes along with it.
