Hope and fear in Syria

“A life that was phenomenally difficult, every day a battle for survival just to get food, water, medication and education.” These are Jesuit Father Tony O’Riordan’s words used to describe what life was like for people under the rule of Assad in Syria which lasted over decades. This morning (9 December 2024) he spoke with Pat Kenny on Newstalk FM about the fears and hopes for the people in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime over the weekend. Fr Tony O’Riordan SJ, is Director of Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Syria, he spent three years working there and returned to Ireland in June 2024. Earlier in the week Father Tony visited the Irish Jesuit Communications office to share the backstory of what was happening in Syria, which led to the historic weekend events.
