Brian Grogan SJ has just received a US Independent Press Award for his biography of Pedro Arrupe SJ, the former Father General of the Jesuits worldwide. The cause for the beatification and canonization of Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ, the 28th Superior General of the Society of Jesus, officially opened in Rome on February 5, 2019, the 28th anniversary of his death.

In this part one of an extended interview with Pat Coyle of Irish Jesuit Communications, based on his book, Brian Grogan gives a short synopsis of the controversial Jesuit’s life before explaining how a trip to Lourdes led to Arrupe joining the Jesuit Order.

He then goes on to speak in detail about Fr Arrupe’s time in Japan where he tended to those maimed and dying after the dropping of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima by the USA. He explains the impact the atrocity had on him and how it shaped the rest of his life and ministry.
