‘Up Close and After’
Colm Brophy is an art therapist, artist and former Jesuit. On Tuesday 31 January he will exhibit a selection of his works in The Arrupe Room, in Milltown Park. The exhibition is entitled ‘Up Close and After’ and features semi-abstracts, paintings of ceramics and his own version of paintings of the masters that appeal to him.
In this interview with Pat Coyle of Irish Jesuit Communications, Colm talks about his life-long love of art, and the family influences that lead him to eventually make art and art therapy his career. He says his life as a PP in a parish in Zambia was busy and demanding but he still found time to teach people how to paint.
He talks about his return to Ireland and his studies in art therapy in Leeds. He says art therapy can benefit anyone but can be especially helpful for those suffering from trauma. And he talks about his work in Manresa – the Jesuit Center for Spirituality in Clontarf, Dublin, and with JUST- the Jesuit University Support Training, helping people from the local area of Ballymun get into third level education.
