Barton Geger SJ: Interpreting the Spiritual Exercises
November 3, 2025 in Featured Podcasts, News
In part one of this three part series, American Jesuit Barton Geger SJ speaks with Pat Coyle of Irish Jesuit Communications about the life and writings of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. He says that we have more writings from Ignatius than we do from any other figure from the 16th century, including seven thousand letters and his most famous book the Spiritual Exercises.
Many interpretations of the Spiritual Exercises have been made, but Fr Geger believes certain values and priorities of Saint Ignatius have been overlooked. The theologian’s work involves helping people see what may have been missed, and how Saint Ignatius’ teachings have been interpreted differently throughout the centuries.
