The Beatitudes – ‘The blessing is within the experience’

Best-selling author Richard Leonard SJ speaks to Pat Coyle of Irish Jesuit Communications about the ‘big gospel passage on law and love’ known as the Beatitudes. He maintains that “the blessing is within the experience” of each Beatitude – whether poor, persecuted, hungry for justice, or in mourning.

According to the Australian Jesuit, there is great significance in the theology of Jesus as a friend, as someone who accompanies people in the Beatitudes, who says “I am with you” through it all. This interview is based on Leonard’s latest book The Law of Love: Modern Language for Ancient Wisdom (Paulist Press).
