Brian Grogan SJ, author of the award-winning book Pedro Arrupe: A Heart Larger than the World, speaks to Pat Coyle of Irish Jesuit Communications about worldwide Jesuit leader Pedro Arrupe’s stroke and final years.

Referring to Arrupe’s agonising death, Fr Grogan says:

“His death was a very difficult physical affair, but he was there in the dark and totally committed to the God that he had always tried to be close to… there he was as a bundle of energy and that bundle of energy took a while, I think, to dissipate in his death.”

Fr Grogan talks about Arrupe’s inspirational leadership. He says, “He lived out the Ignatian ideals in a way that make your hair stand on end… I think he was a man one would have died for if called upon to do so.”

Also discussed is Arrupe’s prayer life, his cause of beatification and canonization, and his answer to the question “What does Jesus Christ mean to you?”
