The Irish Jesuit Provincial speaks of the qualitative difference between ‘happiness’ and ‘joy’ in this Christmas message to Jesuits, colleagues, and their families and friends, noting that joy comes from self-transcendence and service to others.

He says he is deeply gratified by the work that is going on in the Province and beyond, and he thanks everyone for their commitment and resilience in what has been a most challenging year for the entire world, as it tries to cope with a global pandemic.

He says there is much to look forward to in 2021-22, including the two major anniversaries: the 500th of St Ignatius being struck by a cannonball at the siege of Pamplona (22 May 1521), which led to his conversion; and the 400th of his canonisation, along with St Francis Xavier, on 12 March 2022.

Fr Leonard wishes everyone health, hope, joy and connection in the New Year to come.
