Casting light on a Jesuit of note
Messenger publications have published a new book by Jesuit, Thomas Morrissey SJ, entitled Robert St Leger SJ (1788–1856): Educationist, Spiritual Guide, Administrator and Vicar Apostolic to Calcutta and Bengal ».
The book examines the life and work of Robert St Leger SJ, an Irish Jesuit whose influence extended across education, spiritual direction and church leadership in the nineteenth century. St Leger played a significant role in both Ireland and India during a period of considerable change for the Catholic Church.
Though an innovator and skilled resolver of conflict throughout his wide-ranging and productive religious life, Robert St Leger is not a name that readily comes to mind among historically notable Jesuits. Yet even a brief survey of his life reveals a figure of remarkable influence and vision.
Born in 1788, St Leger entered the Society of Jesus during a century marked by political upheaval and religious restriction for Irish Catholics. Among his early achievements was developing the Jesuit novitiate at Tullabeg College into a functioning college.
He was later appointed Vicar Apostolic to Calcutta and Bengal, and worked in a complex colonial and religious environment. The book highlights his efforts to foster cooperation among Christians of different denominations, including his role in establishing an ecumenical school in Calcutta.
He also worked closely with Mary Aikenhead and the Religious Sisters of Charity, serving as spiritual guide and helping to formulate the congregation’s constitutions during its formative years.
Like many Irish Catholics of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, St Leger left behind few personal documents. Drawing on extensive research in the Jesuit archives, Fr Morrissey has reconstructed a detailed chronology of his life and ministry. In doing so, he illuminates the depth of St Leger’s vocation, the breadth of his achievements, and the quiet but lasting impact of this educationalist, spiritual director and church leader.
This study brings a once-shadowed figure decisively into the light.
