Living the Camino Back Home

Living the Camino Back Home, a new publication by Brendan McManus SJ and Katherine O’Flynn FCJ, aims to help pilgrims, transformed by their Camino journey, to keep their pilgrim experience alive and fruitful once back home.

The authors, both seasoned pilgrimage leaders and pilgrim companions, note,”To journey and be transformed by the journey is to be a pilgrim.” They say this is a succinct definition, the truth of which is borne out by many who undertake the Camino journey, regardless of their religious beliefs.

Both authors have learned however that the issue for many such pilgrims is how to ‘bottle’ that spiritual awakening or transformation, and understand the Camino experience in terms of the ‘spirituality of everyday life’.

Brendan McManus SJ and Katherine O’Flynn FCJ are experienced Camino companions who offer pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela a safe and welcoming space for quiet reflection and sharing. So in their book, the authors suggest ways in which pilgrims can bring the spiritual learnings and experiences from their Camino journey back home and apply them in their daily lives – the real Camino.

Based on their own extensive experience, and the insights shared by pilgrims over the years, the book contains practical suggestions and tips for reflection, along with the authors’ photos of the Camino throughout. All this is to help returning pilgrims integrate the ‘Camino feeling’ into life at home.

About the authors: Brendan McManus SJ is a spiritual director and retreat giver. He has written several books on the Camino and on Ignatian spirituality, including the award-winning Redemption Road: Grieving Along the Camino, and the Finding God in the Mess trilogy.

Katherine O’Flynn FCJ is a former teacher and psychotherapist. She currently volunteers in Santiago as a Camino Companion.
